Thursday, September 9: The Crusaders defeated St. Lawrence Seminary 3-2 in a match played at Mulder Field tonight. Jason Braunschweig got the blue and gold on the board early when he hustled into the box, collided with the goalkeeper, and bodied the ball into the goal in the ninth minute. The Hilltoppers answered in the 14th minute, cleaning up a rebound chance after keeper Logan Ganz denied the first point-blank shot. Near the end of the first half St. Lawrence took the lead with a goal off of a corner kick opportunity when CWC's defense was unable to clear the ball. In the second period, Jared Regnerus made a nice first-touch move past one defender and then blasted a shot which deflected off a second defender and into the back of the net. The Crusaders then took the lead with a goal on a set piece. Sophomore defender Trevor Zonnefeld took the direct kick and sent it into the box, where Tiffer Alsum directed it to Trevor De Vries who sent it home. The Crusader defense, led by Zonnefeld and sophomore Tyler Katsma, successfully kept the Hilltoppers from scoring the rest of the way; Ganz finished with seven saves. "A big win for us tonight," commented Coach Hofman. "St. Lawrence has an excellent team, and it showed great heart for us to come back from that halftime deficit." CWC will travel to University School of Milwaukee on Tuesday.
Tuesday, September 7: Freshmen Jason Braunschweig and Jared Regnerus both scored twice as the Crusaders won their first road game of the year, 5-2 over host Mayville. Braunshweig struck in the 8th minute when he finished a pass from sophomore midfielder Trevor De Vries. However, the Cardinals answered with a through ball goal in the 34th minute, and things were headed to a 1-1 halftime score before Jacob Smith bulled his way through a pack of Mayville defenders and snuck a ball inside the near post for a 2-1 CWC advantage. In the second frame, the home team had the wind advantage but it was the blue and gold that took control of the action. Braunshweig once again got it started, this time taking possession of a missed trap by a defender and beating the goalkeeper one on one. Sophomore defender Tyler Katsma then earned a penalty kick after being taken down in the box during a long run; although he missed the shot, Regnerus was there to pound home the rebound. Just three minutes later Regnerus found the back of the net again; after beating a defender around the corner he blasted a shot past the keeper. Mayville finished the scoring with a nice give-and-go goal, and Logan Ganz finished with 2 saves. "Not out best match, but I was pleased with how we controlled most of the second half action, even against the wind," said Coach Hofman. The Crusaders will host conference rival St. Lawrence Seminary on Thursday.
Friday, September 3: CWC's JV soccer team defeated a JV team from Fond du Lac 3-2 in a match at Mulder Field tonight. The Crusaders struck early when sophomore forward Jordan De Jager deposited the ball in the back of the net just 48 seconds into the game. In the 33rd minute, Jason Braunschweig jumped on a low goal kick and dribbled past the FdL defense for a 2-0 halftime lead. As the second frame opened, CWC continued to control the action and got a beautiful goal when Jason Braunschweig tracked down a long pass near the endline, turned and put the ball back in front of the net where Trevor De Vries headed it home. FdL got on the board in the 68th minute directly off of a corner kick, and then scored less than 3 minutes later to cut the Crusader lead to 3-2. The blue and gold came back with a goal of their own only two minutes later when Braunschweig finished a pass from Jared Regnerus. Logan Ganz finished the night with four saves for the Crusaders. "It was good to see us come back after the Cardinals scored those two quick goals. I was very pleased with our effort and execution tonight," commented Coach Matt Hofman. CWC visits Mayville on the Tuesday after Labor Day.
Friday, August 27: The Crusaders notched their first victory of the season this year, a 5-0 home win over Cambridge-Deerfield. After dominating the first 20 minutes of the scoreless match, the blue and gold scored a trio of goals in just over two minutes. Freshman Jared Regnerus got it started when he converted an assist from Tiffer Alsum. Only 22 seconds later, after jumping on the kick-off, the two exchanged roles as Regnerus fed Alsum. Then Alsum knocked home a rebound of a Jason Braunschweig shot. Still in the first half, Jordan De Jager scored off a pass from Braunschweig for a 4-0 lead at the break. In the second half, CWC got a goal from Tyler Katsma when he made a run through a few defenders and put the ball past the keeper. Logan Ganz recorded four saves for his first shut-out. "We controlled the action tonight," said Coach Matt Hofman. "The boys successfully put some of the things we had worked on in the classroom and on the practice field to good use tonight, and it feels good to get that first win."
Tuesday, August 24: Crusader JV soccer kicked off tonight with a home contest against conference foe Kettle Moraine Lutheran. The Crusaders controlled much of the action in the first half, but failed to generate a lot of good scoring chances. The two main reasons seemed to be a tendency to over-touch in the offensive third of the field and a desire to line up the "perfect" shot before taking it. With less than a minute left before halftime, a turnover in the midfield led to a through-ball that KML's #13 converted against freshmen goalkeeper Logan Ganz. In the second half, CWC continued to possess the ball and started to get some excellent opportunities, including a couple off corner kicks by Trevor Zonnefeld. In the 61st minute, Tyler De Vries dropped the ball back to Travis De Groot, who sent a cross to the far side of the goal where Trevor De Vries was waiting to head the ball in. Neither team was able to score the rest of the way, resulting in a 1-1 tie. Ganz finished with 6 saves.
